KIKAIMAX SUMI

Building a visual language

KIKAIMA X SUMI is a painting project through which I aim to develop an aesthetic language from its most basic elements. Rather than starting from a predefined image, I propose building a system capable of generating compositions through a vocabulary of gestures and a set of rules that determine how they relate to one another.

The project draws on an idea close to the construction of written language. A set of simple elements can form a dictionary; by establishing relationships among them, increasingly complex structures can emerge, just as words form sentences. In X SUMI, these elements are geometric gestures, and the rules connecting them make it possible to generate compositions that have not been drawn beforehand.

I am particularly interested in investigating how a visual language is constructed and what makes a particular combination of elements aesthetically compelling. To that end, X SUMI incorporates different degrees of randomness within a rule-based system, aiming to explore compositions that retain a certain coherence without their results being entirely predetermined. Even so, the point is not to generate shapes at random, but to discover which relationships allow an accumulation of elements to begin to be perceived as a work with an identity of its own.

The project is conceived to bring these compositions into the physical world through the KIKAIMA robot, using traditional painting tools and materials. Mechanical execution introduces another dimension to the language: the machine's movements, the characteristics of each tool, and the behaviour of ink or paint on the surface. A single composition may preserve its structure while displaying material differences with each execution.

With X SUMI I want to explore the relationship between algorithms and artistic expression, between the logical and rational construction of a language and its material results, always with a stochastic component. I do not aim to reproduce a particular style or establish a definitive aesthetic, but to develop an open system capable of evolving and acquiring a visual identity of its own through its compositions and their materialisation on paper.
